A Prayer for a Deeper Understanding of the Love of God

 

 

Jehovah God, creator of heaven and earth, You are the source of all light and of all love.  We thank You for being the light that lights our pathway; but even more, for the love that reaches out to us unconditionally and undeservedly. Your love is matchless and marvelous.  Your love never lets us go, never lets us down, never lets us off.   Your Word teaches us that “You are love.”  Your love is unaffected by our circumstances.  You were the God of love when You sent the flood that covered the earth.  You were the God of love during the 400 years of slavery in Egypt.  You were the God of love during the 40 years in the wilderness.   You were the God of love when the temple was destroy- ed.  You were the God of love when Jesus was nailed to the cross.  Yes, in everything -You are the God of love.   Everything in our lives has been sifted through the fingers of Your love.  No permission is given without it being weighed in the scales of love. Your love is behind every event, every situation, every heartache and every storm.  Even when it seems that we have been forgotten or forsaken, we know that You love us.    Lord, we know that there is nothing we can do that will make You love us less, even as there is nothing we can do that will make You love us more.    What an amazing love.   Help us never to doubt it, never to question it, never to abuse it.   The poverty of our love is directly related to our failure to grasp the height, the depth, the breadth of Your love.  Grant that the truth of Your love for us may seep deep into our minds and our souls that we may totally be engulfed by that love.  

 

Oh, God, may Your love for us spill over into our love of the bridegroom, Jesus the Christ.   May we truly be a bride to Him, who so loved us that He gave His life for us.  May we express that love in our worship, in our words and in our deeds.  Help us to  become those who are known by our love for You and for others, yes, for all humankind of every land and nation, of every tongue and tribe.   Let us be the hands and feet of that love which held our Savior on the cross during those long hours of desolation and pain.  Help us, O Living Christ, to use not only our mouth to speak of Your love, but to use our hands and our feet to show that love.  Help us to put our body language in sync with the Gospel message.   Help us to love the sinner and the saint, the banker and the beggar, the tolerant and the intolerant, the Calvinist and the Armenian, the Baptist and the Anabaptist, the Republican and the Democrat.  Help us, O God, to love for only love conquers the human heart.
