Little Talks With God

A Prayer for Trust In God’s Faithfulness

Father in heaven, high and lifted up, my mind can not comprehend you, nor can my words describe you, yet your Word sets forth your attributes as a heavenly rosary, bead upon bead, each more beautiful than the one before it  As I reach out to touch it, I hardly know where to start.  Some would start with your sovereignty and power; others with your holiness and purity; others with your righteousness and justice.  Others would certainly reach for your love and mercy; others for your omniscience and your omnipresence.  As I read your Word this day my fingers gently and tenderly grasp the bead of faithfulness.  The Holy Word reminds us again and again of your faithfulness.  You teach us that we worship a God who is faithful.  You remind us that your faithfulness reaches the sky.  You tell us that, “If we confess our sins, You will be faithful to forgive us of our sins and cleanses us of all unrighteousness”  You remind us again and again that it is your faithfulness that strengthens and sustains us in time of difficulty and discouragement, pain and poverty, disappointment and death.

It is your faithfulness which is the well of renewal for my soul.  It is your trustworthiness, your steadfastness that holds me up, that gives me hope; that helps me to deal with the challenges and contentions, the belly blows and the belly aches that life dishes out time and time again.

Even as I say that, I am quick to confess that like Ethan the Ezrahite I am tempted to question and yes, even doubt your faithfulness.   The promise to make David King seemed pretty empty when he was losing the battle.  When Ethan asked, “Where is your love you are so famous for, Lord?  What happened to your promises to David?” (Ps. 89:49) So I am tempted to ask, “Where were you when the tornado took the lives of four young BOY Scouts this week in Iowa?  Where were you when the heavens opened and the rains came down and the rivers rose and the dams broke and lives were lost and cropland washed away?” Where were you this week when a gifted,  committed pastor was told that he had all the signs of having Parkinson’s disease.

Father, I know I walk by faith and not by sight.  I know I would not find You worth worshipping if one of the beads on the rosary of heaven was not labeled: “Faithful”.  Who would want to worship an unfaithful God?  No, we worship You, we praise You, we love You.  We can say with the saints of old: “It’s all right even when everything is all wrong.”

Hear my prayer Oh, faithful one.  Amen.
