Little Talks With God

A Prayer For A Better Tomorrow

Father God, when Your Son was asked by His disciples to teach them to pray He taught them to call You their Father, and this we eagerly do, because it reminds us that we are Your children.  He next told them to pray, “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”  This morning we wonder if this is what He would have said to us if we today would ask Him to teach us to pray.  And if He did, would it be something we really desire?  Our nation today faces some of its biggest challenges in its history.  Our banks are on the verge of bankruptcy; our jobless rate is rising like the July thermometer; our health care is placing an unbearable burden upon employer and employee; our educational system is not keeping up with the other industrial countries in the world.  It is almost humorous that the Freedom for Religious Foundation and the Atheist Alliance International is spending its time and money to remove, “So help me God” from the inaugural oath and to ban inaugural prayers.

Certainly there are many things which are worthy of our prayers.  People need jobs, the hungry must be fed, the sick must be cared for, and our education must prepare the youth of today for the world of tomorrow.  Are these not the things for which we should be praying?  But is not a prayer that, “Your kingdom come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” a prayer for these things and more?  Is not a prayer that Jesus might walk into our world, walk into our government, our businesses, our industry, our offices, our board rooms, our class rooms, our homes, our marriages, our neighborhoods a prayer that address all of the challenges that our nation faces?

Father, what our country needs is nothing less than a radical new vision of what our personal life, our family life, our community life, our social life, our economic life, our political life can be.  And is that not our prayer, when we pray: “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”  We need a vision of what life can be, along with a way of life that helps bring that vision into reality.

All wise and all powerful God, we are quick to realize that You did not ask us to bring in Your Kingdom; You ask only that we pray for it.  You ask that we long for it, that we have a passion for it.  It would be sheer pride and foolishness to imagine that we could establish Your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.  Only You, the Son and Your Holy Spirit can bring that about.  But it would be a sin for us not to long for it, not to align ourselves with children of the Kingdom, not to do that which we know to be Your will and desire for our county and its people.

Yes, God, we sing “God bless America” and well we should, but let us also pray: “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”   Amen
